Terms of service

These terms are a simple agreement between you and Rootcause LLC ("we", "us"), the maker of Fil. By using Fil, you agree to them. Your use of Fil from the App Store is also governed by Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement (the "Standard EULA"); where these terms are silent, Apple's Standard EULA applies.

The app

Fil is a personal tool for capturing thoughts by voice, text, photos, and links. We grant you a personal, non-transferable license to use Fil on devices you own or control, for your own non-commercial use. Fil is free to use; some features are part of an optional paid subscription, Fil Pro (see below).

Your content

Anything you create in Fil is yours and stays on your device. You are responsible for your content and for keeping your own backups. We have no access to it and cannot recover it for you.

Fil Pro

Fil Pro is an optional, auto-renewing subscription that unlocks smart search. It's sold through Apple's App Store: Apple bills you and handles payment, and we never see your payment details. The price and billing period are shown before you subscribe. Your subscription renews automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel at least 24 hours beforehand. You can manage or cancel it anytime in iOS Settings › Apple Account › Subscriptions. Apple's Standard EULA and Apple Media Services Terms also apply to your purchase.

Smart search

Smart search is a Fil Pro feature. When you ask Fil a question in your own words, it sends the text of your thoughts to our AI provider (Anthropic) to find and reflect on the ones relevant to your question. Our Privacy Policy explains how that data is handled. It runs only when you choose to use it. Its results are generated by AI and may be inaccurate, incomplete, or unavailable, and they are not professional, medical, legal, or financial advice. Use your own judgment.

Acceptable use

Please don't use Fil to break the law or to infringe others' rights, and don't attempt to reverse engineer, resell, or misuse the app beyond what this license and applicable law allow.

No warranty

Fil is provided "as is," without warranties of any kind. We don't guarantee that transcriptions, titles, smart search results, or any feature will be accurate or uninterrupted.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, or for any loss of data, arising from your use of Fil.

Changes

We may update these terms; continued use after an update means you accept the revised terms.
